Baku City Tour
Explore the Azerbaijani capital today on guided walking tour. Starting in the winding alleyways of “Icheri Sheher”, the medieval walled city, discover mosques, the Palace of the Shirvan Shahs and the 12th century Maiden’s Tower. Moving into the more modern part of the city, walk past the imposing mansions built by oil barons during the boom of 1870-1914, and visit Martyrs’ Alley, a poignant memorial to fallen heroes which also offers superb views over the Bay of Baku.
Baku - Absheron – Gobustan - Nakhchivan
Today enjoy a half day excursion to the Absheron Peninsula, beginning with the Ateshgah, a Zoroastrian temple whose fires were once fuelled by pockets of natural gas. The peninsula features several medieval fortresses and an attractive neo-Gothic mosque at Amirjan. Travelling along the Caspian shore, enter the desert to the south of Baku and discover thousands of rock paintings from the early Stone Age as well as graffiti left by passing Roman soldiers. The arid lunar landscape is punctuated with a series of bizarre mud volcanoes.
In the evening take a flight to the Azeri enclave of Nakhchivan
Today spend the whole day exploring the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Your visit will include the cave shrine of Asabi-Kahf, the 12th century mausoleum’s of Momine Khatun and Yusuf ibn Kusseir. There will also be time to see the Badamli hot water mineral spring, renowned for its healing properties as well as the carpet and history museum.
Nakhchivan - Shamakhi – Sheki
This morning catch and early flight from Nakhchivan back to Baku. On arrival you will depart for Shamakhi and Sheki. The historic town of Shamakhi was known to the Romans and in the Middle Ages was capital of the Shirvanshah state. Continue onto Sheki.
Sheki - Kish
This morning explore Sheki’s impressive fortress and fascinating museum as well as visiting the Royal Summer Palace of the Sheki Khans, which features magnificent frescoes and stained glass. In the afternoon travel to the nearby village of Kish, whose 1st century church is the oldest in the Caucasus. The village’s mountain location makes it the perfect place for a walk in the foothills of the Caucasus. Stay in a local guesthouse with great home cooked food.
Kish - Ganja - Baku
From Kish, drive to Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second city and the birthplace of Nizami, the nation’s most famous poet, whose mausoleum e is visited on a tour of the city. You will also discover the 17th century Shah Abbas Mosque, the Orthodox church, and the quirky “Bottle House”, decorated with 50,000 glass bottles. Return to Baku in the afternoon for an overnight stay.
