Arrival Tashkent - Afternoon City Tour
On arrival in Tashkent you will be met by your gudie and driver and taken to your hotel for immediate check-in. In the afternoon take a guided tour of the capital, including Amir Timur Square, the Navoi Theatre and the earthquake memorial as well as the mausoleums and mosques of the old city. If time allows also travel on the metro with its ornate Soviet-era stations
Tashkent - Khiva - Desert Citadels
Catch an early morning flight to Khiva, and travel across the dusty plains of Khorezm to the incredible fortified cities of Toprak Kala and Ayaz Kala. These amazing fortresses date back at least 2000 years and were devastated by Turkic raiders in the 6th century. Return to Khiva to stay overnight.
Khiva City Tour
This morning drive to Khiva and spend the day exploring this remote city. The citadel of Ichan Kala is packed with beautiful Islamic architecture, at the heart of which lies Kukhna Ark, residence of the notorious Khans of Khiva. Outside the city walls wander through the bustling bazaar of Dishan Kala.
Khiva - Konye Urgench
This morning cross the border into Turkmenistan to discover the ruined city of Konye Urgench. The one-time capital of Khorezm was one of Islam’s major cities in the 12th century and the remains hint at its former grandeur.
Konye Urgench - Ashgabat
An early flight allows time for a full day’s exploration of Turkmenistan’s gleaming capital city. Ashgabat was transformed from a fairly dull provincial outpost into ‘The White City’ by ex-President Niyazov, whose decrees even extended to the size of the marble tiles which cover the buildings.
Nisa - Geok Depe - Kow Ata Lake Excursion
A full day of sightseeing around Ashgabat today, starts at the ancient Parthian city of Nisa and continuing to Geok Depe, where the Russians finally conquered the country in 1881. Later on there is the opportunity to bathe in the warm waters of the underground lake of Kow Ata .
Ashgabat - Anew - Abiverd - Mary (Merv)
Today is a long drive east first of all stopping at Anew, one of the earliest places in the world to cultivate grain, before continuing to Abiverd, once one of the most important Sassanid cities of Norther Khorasm. Afterward arrive in Mary.
Gonur Depe Full Day Excursion
Today travel about 3 hours out into the Kara Kum desert to visit one of Turkmenistan’s most important sites – Gonur Depe. This fascinating Bronze Age palace complex is thought to have been the capital of the newly discovered Margiana civilisation, and is still in the process of being excavated. Later return to Mary.
Mary - Merv - Bukhara
This morning visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Merv which at its height it was a major industrial centre and one of the most important places on the entire Silk Road. Driving across the Uzbek border, your journey continues to the city of Bukhara.
Bukhara City Tour
Spend the whole exploring this most atmospheric of cities with your guide. Wandering through the medieval streets you will discover mosques, madrassahs, caravanserais and trading domes which still feel alive with the presence of merchants and traders.
Sitorai Makhi Khosa Excursion
This morning travel out of Bukhara to visit the Sitorai Makhi Khosa – the palace of the last Emir, built by the Russians in a mix of Russian and Central Asian styles. The afternoon is then free to discover more of Bukhara’s maze-like streets and incredible buildings.
Bukhara - Shakhrisabz - Samarkand
Between Bukhara and Samarkand lies Shakhrisabz, birthplace of the great Uzbek hero Tamerlane. His huge palace, Ak Serai, was entered via a massive arch flanked by 65-metre high towers. After exploring the town, continue to Samarkand, perhaps the best-known Silk Road city.
Samarkand Full Day Tour
Samarkand is as old as Rome and was for centuries the most important city along the Silk Road, and its iconic structures need no introduction. On today’s full day tour you will visit the famous Registan Square, the fantastically decorated mausoleums of Shah-i-Zinda and the gigantic Bibi Khanum mosque.
