Tbilisi City Tour
Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital has had a prosperous yet turbulent past. Set in the meandering Mtkvari Valley and bordered by several mountain ranges, its buildings are testament to its religious, commercial and strategic importance. Today you will have a full day tour to discover the city, including the impressive cathedral, the simple yet elegant Anchiskhati Basilica, and the imposing Narikala Fortress, which dominates the city. A particular highlight is the visit to the nearby ancient city of Mtskheta, birthplace of Georgian Christianity.
Tbilisi - Sighnaghi - Gremi - Kvareli
Travel east from Tbilisi today, stopping first in the attractive fortified town of Sighnaghi. A stroll through the picturesque streets reveals Orthodox churches and graceful 18th and 19th century houses, and there will be time to visit the interesting ethnographic museum. After wine tasting and lunch in a local wine cellar, continue to Gremi, a former royal citadel whose church mixes Georgian and Persian architectural styles and visit the medieval Alaverdi Monastery, notable for its 1000-year-old frescoes and massive defensive walls. Spend the night in Kvareli, a charming town nestled in the foothills of the Caucasus.
Kvareli - Davit Gareja – Tbilisi
Drive to Davit Gareja this morning, travelling from lush green hills to the semi-desert landscape surrounding Mt Gareja. There will be plenty of time to explore the incredible rock hewn monastery complex, which features interesting frescoes, several chapels and churches and hundreds of cells, before you continue to Tbilisi for an overnight stay.
Tbilisi - Ananuri - Kazbegi - Gudauri
Today, drive along the Georgian Military Highway deep into the sheer-sided Caucasus Mountains. This exciting route takes you past Ananuri where you will stop and visit this attractive fortified church with its spectacular setting above Zhinvali Lake. Continue on to Kazbegi, where the walk up to the Holy Trinity Church at Gergeti offers magnificent views of the snow-capped peaks. Retracing your steps along the highway, spend the night in Gudauri.
Gudauri - Gori - Vardzia
This morning leave Gudauri and descend to Georgia’s fertile plains, first of all visiting the cave town of Uplistsikhe, dug from the cliffs in the 6th century BC. Next discover another side to the country’s history in Gori. Georgia’s most infamous son, Stalin, was born here, and his house and museum make fascinating visits. Continue on to Vardzia where you will stay overnight.
A highlight of any trip to Georgia is the 12th century cave monastery of Vardzia. Set in the slopes of Mt Erusheli and accessed by hidden tunnels, the complex features intricate frescoes and at its peak housed 6000 monks. Its isolated position between the cliff and the Mtkvari River offered excellent defence against the Mongols.
Vardzia – Lake Paravani - Tbilisi
Today’s drive back to Tbilisi takes you across the Jakhaveti Plateau, a high volcanic plateau with an average altitude of just over 2000 metres. En route, stop at Lake Paravani to admire the mountain views across the waters of Georgia’s largest lake.
