This comprehensive 12 day tour takes in the highlights of one of the most reclusive and fascinating countries in the world, a cross roads of civilisations for centuries. You will be able to explore Turkmenistan’s gleaming marble capital, Ashgabat, as well as its ancient Silk Road sites. Some camping is also involved as explore the stunning Yangykala canyon and spend the night by the ‘Gate of Hell’ – the flaming Darvaza Gas Crater.

Your Journey In Detail

  • Arrive Ashgabat - City Tour

    Arrive in Ashgabat and in the afternoon you will be able to enjoy a tour of Turkmenistan’s gleaming, white marble capital. Fuelled by oil and gas receipts there has been a building boom post-independence and today’s Ashgabat is a mix of ministries and monuments making it at times feel like one of the most bizarre cities in the world.

  • Ashgabat – Nisa – Arkadash - Geok Depe – Nohur

    Leave Ashgabat to discover the important Parthian site of Nisa, Afterwards see a display of the sturdy Akhaltsikke Turkmen horses at the Arkadash Stud farm before finally visiting Geok Depe – of great spiritual importance to Turkmen.  Later arrive at Nohur in the Kopet Dag mountains.

  • Nohur - Balkanabat

    After time exploring this remote and traditional village, leave Nohur for Balkanabat in Western Turkmenistan. On the way stop at one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country, the mosque of Parau Bibi.

  • Dehistan Excursion

    Today enjoy a trip to the important Silk Road site of Dehistan which flourished from the 10th to 14th centuries under the Khorezmshahs. After exploring the atmospheric site there will be time to visit Meshkat cemetery with its elaborate mausoleums before returning to Balkanabat.

  • Balkanabat – Yangykala Canyon

    Leave Balkanabat for one of the most remote and spectacular natural sights in Turkmenistan, Yangykala Canyon. You will be able to walk through the canyons with their walls of pink, red and yellow rock searing through the walls before you camp overnight next to them.

  • Yangykala – Turkmenbashi – Dashoguz

    This morning leave Yangykala and transfer to Turkmenbashi where you will pick up a flight to Dashoguz.

  • Konye Urgench – Darvaza

    Enjoy a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Konye Urgench, the ancient capital of the Khorezm region under the Achaemenid Empire. After exploring the site travel through the Karakum Desert to the ‘Gate of Hell’ – the Darvaza Crater.

  • Darvaza – Ashgabat

    The flaming Darvaza Crater is best enjoyed at night and after camping overnight beside it, today travel south back to Ashgabat.

  • Ashgabat - Anew - Abiverd - Mary

    Today is a long drive east first of all stopping at Anew, one of the earliest places in the world to cultivate grain, before continuing to Abiverd, once one of the most important Sassanid cities of Norther Khorasm. Afterward arrive in Mary.

  • Gonur Depe Excursion

    Today travel through the desert to reach the spectacular site of Gonur Depe, believed to be linked to the ancient Margiana civilisation. With its remoteness out in the now arid desert it difficult not to be impressed by this large site that was once the centre of a flourishing culture.

  • Merv Excursion – Flight to Ashgabat

    This morning enjoy and excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Merv where three large cities over different period were important stopping points on the Silk Road, one in the 12th century was briefly the largest in the world. In the afternoon catch a flight to Ashgabat for your last night in Turkmenistan.

  • Depart Ashgabat

    Today you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight.
